70 years ago today, Japanese planes and mini-submarines attacked Pearl Harbor suddenly and with catastrophic results. The following day, President Roosevelt addressed congress and the nation, declaring war on Japan and bringing the US into WWII. From the movie “Pearl Harbor” (which was mostly a dumb movie but had a few glimmers of great action). [...]

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month
All wars are bloody wars, but World War I created carnage unseen to that point in human history. And when it was finally over, President Wilson declared that the day the hostilities ceased should be celebrated every year as Armistice Day. In 1954 Dwight Eisenhower signed a law amending Armistice Day to celebrate the veterans [...]

Where Were You?
Seems to be the question of the day. I was at Timberhill Villa. I was working a night shift at the front desk that was supposed to be over at 8:30am. As with most mornings I had the TV on behind me tuned to a morning news show. They interrupted their normal witty banter with [...]

Farms, the City and death by allergy

Irony defined
800 year old artifact stolen Apparently someone stole an almost 800 year old artifact from a California church last weekend. No, that’s not ironic. The relic is from St Anthony of Padua. That’s right, the patron saint of lost causes and missing objects. That’s ironic.

Inventor’s Corner
I’ve always wanted to be an inventor. The only problem I’ve run into is that I have no good ideas as of yet. These guys managed to invent a few useful things: Tim Berners-Lee (or TBL as he is sometimes known) invented the internet. Okay, not the internet. He invented the World Wide Web. Of [...]

The side-effect they don’t tell you about…
I’ve had surgery before. In fact, it was only last year that I was “on the table” for 5 ВЅ hours while the doctor cut out polyps and cleaned out my sinuses. So, it’s not like I didn’t know what to expect. But the mistake is in reading news articles about other people and their [...]
